His authorship of two short law tracts and his remarks recorded in the Year-Books have preserved for Sir Ralph de Hengham a definite place in English medieval history. At different times during the reign of Edward I he served as Chief Justice of both the Court Coram Rege and the Common Bench. Mr Dunham's text, written in 1932, takes its place besides Professor Woodbind's work on the text of Bracton's De Legibus, Maitland's presentation of Bracton's Note Book and the Rolls and the Selden Society Year-Books.
